My Baking Journey: From Chocolate Chips to Holiday Traditions
When I think about where my love for baking began, my mind always drifts back to my childhood. I was a little niña in kindergarten, sitting at the kitchen counter of my babysitter, who was also my teacher. Together, we made classic chocolate chip cookies—a simple recipe, but to me, it was pure magic. Those afternoons were about more than cookies; they were about love, patience, and the joy of creating something from scratch.
Now, as the holidays roll around, baking has become so much more than just a hobby. It’s a way to connect—with my kids, my cultura Latina, and the people I bake for. Each recipe is a little story, blending tradition with creativity, and always made con amor.
Holiday Baking with a Twist
The holiday season is the perfect time to take classic recipes and give them a sabor Latino. While I still love a good chocolate chip cookie, adding a drizzle of warm cajeta or the rich sweetness of piloncillo transforms a classic into something uniquely special.
This year, I’m sharing a few holiday favorites that bring a festive twist to familiar flavors:
Horchata Snickerdoodles: The cinnamon-sugar magic of a snickerdoodle combined with the creamy, spiced essence of horchata.
Jamaica Thumbprints: A tangy mermelada de jamaica nestled in buttery cookies—a sweet and tart combination that’s perfect for the holidays.
Concha Holiday Cookies: Inspired by the traditional pan dulce of my childhood, these cookies are topped with colorful sugar designs that make them as beautiful as they are delicious.
Each recipe carries a little piece of my heart, reminding me of the flavors I grew up with and the memories I want to pass down.
The Heart of Holiday Baking
For me, holiday baking isn’t just about desserts. It’s about recreating the magic of those early days in the kitchen with my babysitter/teacher. It’s about the laughter, the smell of canela filling the air, and the joy of sharing something homemade with loved ones.
Baking also gives me a chance to celebrate my roots. When my kids taste a cookie flavored with cajeta or see the swirl of a concha-inspired cookie on the holiday table, I hope they feel the same warmth and connection I did as a child.
Because everything I bake is for the love of butter, sugar, and a good story.
